Telecommunications Company Increases Productivity Savings

Relex Reliability Prediciton Helps to Increase Productivity Savings in Quality Engineering by a Factor of 6!

One of the world leaders in networking for the Internet uses the Relex Reliability Prediction software module to ensure the reliability of the routers and switches that they manufacture for their telecommunications and network equipment. Given that this company's Internet Protocol-based (IP) networking solutions are the foundation of the Internet and most corporate, education, and government networks around the world, the reliability of their products greatly impact everyone who relies on the Internet for business, learning, personal communications, and entertainment.

The Quality Systems business unit, which supports internal engineering and manufacturing departments as well as external customers, implemented Relex Reliability Prediction in 1998 to replace a painfully slow and tedious spreadsheet method for assessing total failure rates. According to the Quality Manager, the leading reason for choosing Relex over the other solutions that they reviewed was its correlation file utility, which they were able to leverage to create a semi-automatic BOM (Bill of Materials) import process. They now have a correlation file that contains more than 40,000 of their own components!

"Since their adoption of the Relex Reliability Prediction module, this company has increased Quality Engineering productivity savings by a factor of 6," said Hunter Shaw, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Relex Software Corporation. "Although they most frequently perform total failure rate assessments during the design stage, they also run them after a prototype is built and again after the product is first shipped to the customer. Relex has given them consistent application of the Telcordia and MIL-HDBK-217 standards, and an automated method for quickly generating accurate, visual prediction reports. Back in 1999, they put Relex into service as 'the method' for running reliability prediction reports for their entire company."

According to this company's Quality Manager, having reliability prediction reports readily available for design engineers has brought awareness to opportunities for improvement, resulting in changes to product design. "While such benefits have never been quantitatively measured, the time and money that Relex has saved us is significant when both Quality Engineering productivity and product improvement opportunities brought to Design Engineering are considered. The excellent sales and technical support that we receive from Relex allows us to continue developing the methods we use to improve our solutions for transporting data, voice, and video.
